Scholarship Program

This scholarship, sponsored by and administered by The Beekeepers of Indiana (“TBoI”), was established to financially assist an individual currently enrolled in an accredited United States based undergraduate degree program preparing the candidate to pursue a career in apiculture.  The Scholarship will provide financial tuition assistance for the selected candidate as well as waive the registration fee for the individual to attend the next scheduled TBoI Fall Conference.

Manner of Award of the Scholarship

  • The $2,000 scholarship will be paid directly to the university toward the student’s tuition.
  • The scholarship will be paid in two installments, one for each semester of an academic year.
  • The academic year first semester will be the fall semester and the second semester will be the spring semester.
  • The payments will be made as soon as the scholarship recipient's enrollment has been verified.

Scholarship Eligibility

  • The candidate must be a student who is in good academic standing.
  • The candidate must have kept honey bees for a minimum of two (2) years by the beginning of their junior college year.
  • The candidate must be a citizen of the United States of America (“US”) who is a full-time student with junior or senior status enrolled in an accredited US based undergraduate degree program that is preparing the candidate to pursue a career in apiculture (commonly through degrees in animal science, biology, entomology, or agriculture).

Scholarship Application

  • Qualified candidates must complete an application form providing their basic contact information, brief beekeeping experience and education, and other relevant data.
  • Candidates must provide letters of recommendation from at least two experienced beekeepers, preferably a mentor and another beekeeping individual familiar with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.  If possible, this individual should be a Master Beekeeper, state apiarist, educator or research/extension specialist in the home state of the candidate.
  • Candidates must write an essay of no less than two, and no more than three, double-spaced typewritten pages describing their reasons they feel they should be awarded the scholarship.  The essay should also outline the candidate’s career ambitions with respect to beekeeping, including both short and long-term plans.
  • Application and essay must be typed or legibly printed in blue or black ink.
  • Applications must be received by the Chairperson of TBoI Scholarship Committee by April 1 of the academic year in which the applicant will attend college as a junior or senior.  Applications can be submitted via email to beekeepers.indiana@yahoo.com or mailed to:

Award Criteria

  • Preference will be given to candidates who, in the judgment of the TBoI Scholarship Committee, are serious in their commitment to pursuing a career in apiculture.  For example, a serious candidate may be planning to pursue a career as a commercial beekeeper, an entomologist, a researcher in apiculture, a queen breeder, or similar profession.
  • The candidate does not need to be a member of The Beekeepers of Indiana.
  • If the candidate is convicted of a felony, the scholarship will be revoked.
  • The candidate must supply a copy of their College Transcript.
  • Following each semester of the year that an individual receives the scholarship, the recipient will prepare an article for The Beekeepers of Indiana newsletter, of at least one page in length.  The article should include photographs and discuss how the scholarship helped the recipient pursue their degree.  The article must be submitted no later than one month following the end of the semester.
  • The scholarship recipient will be required to complete a W-9 for tax purposes.
